This is an incidental finding from an esophagectomy specimen performed for adenocarcinoma. There is a paraganglion sitting on top of a nerve. This is a paraganglion not a paraganglioma and not a neuroendocrine (carcinoid) tumor; were one to stain it, keratins would be negative (and neuroendocrine markers positive).
Case provided by Dr. Elizabeth Montgomery, Clinical Professor, Vice Chair of Faculty Development & Mentoring, Director of Surgical Pathology Fellowship Training Program, Co-Director, Pathology Reference Services, and Editor-In-Chief at Innovative Science Press.
