Case of the Week

Probably as a result of intussusception, this benign Peutz-Jeghers polyp has undergone impressive enteritis cystica profunda changes that mimicked carcinoma clinically. The deep glands are accompanied by their investing lamina propria. They continue to produce mucin that cannot escape and bursts into the tissue, creating a response and adding to the mimicry of carcinoma microscopically. This benign process does not result in pseudomyxoma peritonei.

Case provided by Dr. Elizabeth Montgomery, Clinical Professor, Vice Chair of Faculty Development & Mentoring, Director of Surgical Pathology Fellowship Training Program, Co-Director, Pathology Reference Services, and Editor-In-Chief at Innovative Science Press.
