This is a classic example of epithelial misplacement in a sigmoid colon adenoma. Adenomatous mucosa with its investing lamina propria has herniated into the submucosa. Mucin from the adenomatous epithelium is trapped below the surface and extrudes into the submucosal tissue.
Case provided by Dr. Elizabeth Montgomery, Vice Chair of Faculty Development & Mentoring, Director of Surgical Pathology Fellowship Training Program, Co-Director, Pathology Reference Services, and Editor-In-Chief at Innovative Science Press.
