Case of the Week

Writer: Elizabeth Montgomery, MDElizabeth Montgomery, MD

At the time of a cholecystectomy, the surgeon noted a liver mass and resected it. What is the diagnosis?

Answer – Segmental atrophy of the liver (nodular elastosis).

Comment – This pseudotumor is associated with cardiovascular disease and loss of blood supply to a localized segment of the liver. It presents as a subcapsular mass that mimics neoplasms. The end stage features abundant deposition of elastic tissue, as in this case.
