Case of the Week

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) extending into the mesentery can evoke a dramatic response that mimics sclerosing mesenteritis, complete with fat necrosis and mineralization. For this reason, when reporting needle biopsies displaying features of sclerosing mesenteritis, it is not a bad idea to report "fibro-inflammatory process" and write a note indicating that occasionally NETs produce this response and that sampling error could be an issue.
